Detailed description of Woodlands Golf Course

Woodlands Golf Course is a Public 18 holes golf course  located in Hampton,Virginia.

Woodlands Golf Course first opened for play in 1916. Donald Ross designed the original course and the current design was completed by Ed Ault in 1973

Water comes into play on 11 of the holes and the 52 sand bunkers create surprising challenges on this sometimes underestimated golf course.

Par for the course is 69. From the back tees, the course plays to 5,391 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 4,154 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 6, a par-5 that plays to 528 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 12, a par-3 that plays to 136 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 6, a 528-yard par-5 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 12, a 136 yard par-3.

Our group of travelling seniors played here October 18, 2017 on our annual golf trip from MD. We were attracted by the Donald Ross name, and that was a mistake. The course has good bones, and some really challenging holes, despite being pretty short. Conditions, however, were terrible. Fairways very patchy, with lots of bare/thin patches, and inexplicable wet spots (leaky irrigation pipes, underground springs??). Bunkers were almost unplayable: several had significant standing water. Greens were even worse: very inconsistent, bumpy, bare, grass clippings, and lotsa unrepaired ball marks. Course obviously gets a lot of play, but is barely worth the $19.63 fee. Staff was cordial and very competent. City fathers need to put a few $$ into what could be a cool little layout. We do NOT recommend.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I wouldn't recommend this course, More than a field, but less than a golf course, Worse than average course for the area
